Dreaming of Faraway Places! Stamford Art Association

Fairfield County "It" went to the Stamford Art Association's Opening Reception for Far Away Places.

The Stamford Art Association is a nonprofit organization whose members include painters, sculptors, printmakers, and photographers. Their mission is to provide a forum where emerging and professional artists can exhibit their work to the community and compete in juried shows.

We enjoyed viewing the different artistic expressions of Faraway Places as well as meeting a number of the represented artists.

The event was juried and first place went to Elizabeth Killgore for "Blue Bayou", second place went to Yuko Ike's "Morning Rush" and third place went to Paul Berger's "Last Stop".

Amongst ourselves we each came up with our own particular favorite piece. There was quite a variety of personal choices, the enjoyment of art is such an individual experience.

Afterward a number of us went over to Zaza's Italian Gastro Pub for a tasty light bite.

OMG! Dog & Pony and "Sloth" at the Aldrich Museum

On Sunday, July 19th, Fairfield County  "It"  went to Brunch at the recently opened Dog and Pony in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

It was Opening Day for their first Sunday Brunch.  We happily dined in the outside covered patio. A perfect place on a HOT sunny day.

All of us were completely IN AWE when they brought out this amazing Bloody Mary, a must try, when in the mood.  Look at the size of that candied bacon!

Everyone enjoyed the quality of the dishes. A great first Sunday Brunch Dog and Pony! Delicious!

Next we were off to "Sloth" at the Aldrich Museum. From their website:
The Aldrich’s contribution to Seven Deadly Sins, the first programmatic collaboration between The Fairfield Westchester Museum Alliance. Utilizing the first floor and porch of The Aldrich’s historic “Old Hundred” building that dates from 1783, Bigert and Najafi do not address Sloth thematically, instead opting to advance human understanding by inhabiting the sin.

Later we entered the contemporary art building to view "Circumstance".
I personally enjoyed the Ruby Sky Stiler Ghost Versions where she formed Hydrocal plaster into interpretations of scholarly historical classical sculptures. According to Ruby the historical references are “not present and no longer in existence.”

Another favorite was the artwork of Elif Uras, of which many of the pieces presented were inspired by an original Iznik plate dating from the first half of the sixteenth century, on loan from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

It was a beautiful day spent with delightful company!

The Spotted Horse and Westport Fine Arts Festival

On Saturday, July 18th, Fairfield County "It" had lunch at a much loved upscale pub, The Spotted Horse, before heading over to the Westport Fine Arts Festival.

"It" Holistic Wellness Carrie and I shared the golden and ruby beet salad. The beets were paired with frisee, candied walnuts, goat cheese and aged sherry vinaigrette (delish). I also dined on the tuna tartar with yucon golden potato chips, capers, Dijon and Moroccan spice paste, a favorite!

Others enjoyed:

* Maine lobster club with avocado and bacon
* Seared filet tips w/ roasted corn salsa (yum)
* Blackened Baja fish tacos
* Chicken Milanese w/ lemon vinaigrette & yogurt
* Artichoke Caesar salad
* Ahi Tuna Taco

After lunch, we were off to the Westport Fine Arts Festival to enjoy the work of many fine artists, presenting numerous artistic disciplines!
Several of us purchased items as we meandered through the exhibits.

Halfway through the festival some of us stopped for a refreshment and enjoyed listening to a delightful band called Shiny Lapel Trio. The group showcased their ease with swing, jazz and rock, and great vocal talent. A fun diversion from the art exploration.

The pantomimes were impressive!

The views along the Saugatuck River were lovely!

Another fabulous day in Fairfield County!

Dinner at Bartaco and NYC Swing at the Levitt Pavilion

On Friday, July 17th, Fairfield County "It" met at Bartaco to enjoy some Mexican cuisine and cocktails before heading over to the Levitt Pavilion to see New York City Swing.

We ordered wine, margarita's and lemonade to quench our thirst and enjoyed numerous taco's such as the baha fish, fried oyster, pork belly, wild boar, duck and sesame ribeye. It was the first time I tried the fried oyster taco, and it was scrumptious! "It" Holistic Wellness Carrie enjoyed one of her favorites, the chopped salad. Guacamole with chips & sala verde topped off the Mexican feast!

The majority of us sat on the top of the hill at the Levitt Pavilion and had a wonderful time watching New York City Swing in action. They are a very talented multifaceted jazz swing band! The acoustics were great on the hill top and the weather perfect.

Behind us a group of people started to line dance to the music!

It was a fun filled evening!

Burgundy & Bordeaux vs. the South of France

blind wine tasting

challenged us to determine whether a wine was from

Burgundy or Bordeaux
vs. the South of France

at Castle Wine
in Westport, Connecticut.,

The Blind Tasting consisted of 3 pairings:

Albert Bichot Puligny-Montrachet 2010 vs.
Louis Latour "Grande Ardeche" 2013

Domaine Forey Morey-St. Denis 2010 vs.
Paul Mas Pinot Noir "St. Hilaire" 2013

Chateau De La Coste Margaux 2011 vs.
Triennes "St. Auguste" 2012

A blind wine tasting means you do not know what wine you are drinking (the source of the wine is hidden)

Our wine enthusiasts considered the smell, the color, the taste of the grapes, terroir (earth, climate) and oak concentration as some of the wine sensing skills.

It was a delightful wine educational evening with a wonderful group.

Party at Polo - Conyers Farm, Greenwich

Sunday, July 12th, Fairfield County "It" enjoyed Party at Polo, a benefit for TAG (Transportation Association of Greenwich). TAG provides transportation to the elderly and disabled in Greenwich.

Party at Polo offered not only polo, but a car show, dog contest, fashion parade, tasty food, wine, cocktails and other sponsored gifts.

Hamptons Entertaining, with author Annie Falk at Juliska in Stamford and clever condiments from Victoria Amory

Today, Fairfield County "It" visited fabulous Juliska.

Juliska, offers attractive and clever tableware. Annie Falk was in the store signing her recently released book, Hamptons Entertaining which features inspired dining themes, menu's and recipes from parties thrown in the Hamptons by Annie's close circle of friends. All proceeds from the book will go to Peconic Baykeeper which is devoted to the protection and improvement of the acquatic ecosystems of the Peconic and South Shore estuaries of Long Island.

We also enjoyed sampling a few of Victoria Amory's delicious condiments paired with shrimp, feta cheese and pigs in a poke.

The excursion was topped off with a present from Juliska, a serving dish and bamboo spreading knife. Adorable!
