How Does One Pair Wine with Food?

Fairfield County "It!" recently had a great time absorbing the mystique of pairing wine with food at Castle Wine in Westport, Connecticut.

An interesting assortment of small bites was presented to pair with six wines. A Yuca fry, smoked salmon w/creme fraiche, Greek salad w/Feta, Korean spiced chicken wing, Salami and a nugget of blue cheese.

We learned about the 3 C's of wine and food pairing: Compare, Cut and Contrast..........
The first pairing was a Vinho Verde from Portugal (fresh, zingy, apple and citrus) which successfully "Cut" the fried Yuca, Another pairing - Champagne with smoked salmon and creme fraiche representing "Compare" a seamless taste combination where the whole is better than the parts! The finale was Sherry paired with blue cheese, demonstrating a delectable "Contrast"!

As you can see, all had a delightful time sampling the perfectly orchestrated pairings of wine and food!

Afterward a number of us decided to have "One More" at Little Barn, a fun casual upscale pub.

What a Way to Spend a Summer Day! Putnam County Wine & Food Festival

Fairfield County "It" went to the Putnam County Wine & Food Fest in Patterson, New York at the Beaver Creek Equestrian Center.

The festival is a two-day event featuring New York wine and spirit producers, craft beer, food, arts and crafts, and artists all together on a summer weekend. The purpose of the event is to build connection between cultural, community, green living, culinary and musical entities.

A number of us enjoyed a Krupnikas created by Kas Spirits. Krupnikas is an alcoholic drink that is popular in Lithuania as well as Poland. Legend has it that Benedictine monks created the tasty concoction during the 1500's. The whiskey is mellowed with sweet honey, vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, caraway seeds, cloves, and saffron.

It was a favorite of mine - Yum!

We stopped by the Robibero Winery booth. I enjoyed a taste of the chardonnay which delighted with vanilla, apple and crisp acidity. "It" Tech Finance Guru Michele enjoyed the Rabbit’s Foot wine, a smooth blend of 75% Baco Noir, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, producing a bright and lively red with velvety texture.

A bit later we decided to have lunch and headed over to check out several tasty food trucks. We decided to try out the Clock Tower Grill who is commited to serving and sourcing as much local-sustainable-organic & GMO free food as possible. I enjoyed a tasty lobster roll, while "It" Holistic Wellness Carrie filled herself up with a short rib club sandwich and fries.

Next, we stopped to taste delicious Olive Oils and Vinegar from Dash N Drizzle of Fairfield, Connecticut!

A lovely place to spend a Summer Sunday Afternoon with great company.

Yankee Stadium! New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Fairfield County "It" went to see the New York Yankees battle the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium!

Traffic was a bit of a challenge due to NYC traffic and we arrived at the end of the 2nd inning just in time to see the Yankees hit a home run!

We found our seats in the stands and discovered we were surrounded by the Bergen County, NJ police force! They kept us safe and also bought us some beer!

The game went into overtime and unfortunately the Yankees did not come out on top. But, still a delightful evening at the Yankee Stadium!

Alive @ Five with Sister Hazel!

Fairfield County "It" went to Alive @ Five in Stamford, Connecticut to see Sister Hazel.

Stamford-Downtown promotes Alive@Five during July and August bringing well known bands to perform an outside concert in Columbus Park.

It was a lovely summer evening and the crowd was very pumped to see Sister Hazel!

"It" Holistic Wellness Carrie was thrilled when they played "All for You".

Wow! Meet the Chef - Arik Bensimon from Lefarm

On Thursday, August 6, 2015 Fairfield County "It" went to the Westport Farmers Market to watch Arik Bensimon, the Chef at Lefarm, in action creating a farm to table seasonal dish.

The Westport Farmers Market brings fresh, local, healthy and seasonal food to the Fairfield County community. They also promote education about local food, local farms, and sustainable practices.

A goal of Lefarm is to support local farmers in Connecticut as much as possible. When dining at their restaurant in Westport, Connecticut your dinner will be meticulously sourced and simply prepared to provide an exquisite farm to table experience.

Chef, Arik Bensimon, chose seasonal heirloom tomatoes to be the core of his culinary creation. He sourced a variety of To-Die-For tomatoes of different colors and shapes and sliced them into bite size pieces. Next, he chopped up fresh chives and scallions and combined all of the ingredients with a sherry vinegar and olive oil.

The delicious tomato concoction was shared with the audience, a mouthful of seasonal joy!

One of the participants asked Arik about how to use black garlic. He explained it is a sweet garlic that can be paired with food such as the grilled octopus, presented to the right, on their regularly seasonally updated menu.

When making that particular octopus entree, Arik first puree's the black garlic and then spreads it thinly on the serving plate. It provides a sweet garlic contrast to the grilled octopus that wonderfully WOWS your taste buds when combined together!

As always, another delightful experience at the Westport Farmers Market!
