"A Day in Nantucket!"

​Fairfield County "It!"
​
had a charmed time in
​
Nantucket, Massachusetts.

First stop
​the Whaling Museum
a must see.
Inside you will be greeted by the 46 foot Sperm Whale
that washed up on the Nantucket shore on New Years Day in 1998.

​After the museum, we decided to do the Historic Walking Tour
which took us up
cobblestoned Main Street
with its large 18th and 19th century
Federal and Greek Revival
​homes topped with widow walks.  

The cobblestone streets,
laid in the mid 1800's contribute to the allure of Nantucket.

​


​Lower Main Street is full of clever shops such as Lion's Paw.

During our walking tour we met a native who suggested we visit
St. Paul's Church and view the Louis Comfort Tiffany windows.  

Inside, we met
the Reverend John Beach and he told us how extraordinary it is to see the windows glow when the sun directly shines through the glass. 

The windows date from the construction of the church in 1902 and were almost replaced, because they were considered dated.  
​Thankfully, they remain.

We hopped on Gail's Tours
 for a two hour bus excursion around the island.  
​Gail is a seventh-generation native and full of tales.

One stop was Old Mill where we learned in order for a Mill to work it needs either two or four sheets.
If you place three sheets,
the mill movement is crazy and that is where the phrase
"Three Sheets to the Wind" came from.

There are many bicycle rental shops and
nicely laid out biking trails throughout the island.  
You can easily bike to fabulous beaches, cranberry bogs and other wonderful seaside attractions.

​All along the island,
​the streets of Nantucket are lined with homes covered in
classic weathered cedar shingles and white trim.

​A great place to grab a bite to eat is
CRU located along the dock of Nantucket Harbor.  

The boat lined view of the waterfront is spectacular.
CRU is an oyster bar with upscale pub cuisine and a quality wine list.
 
I ordered two native Nantucket oysters,  
and the crispy flounder sandwich w/pickled red cabbage & cilantro aioli
 which paired well with a lovely rosé wine that tastefully balanced
the earthy cilantro enhanced fish and the sensual salinity of the
delicious oysters. 

One of my friends enjoyed
"the fun to look at"
fried oyster slider sandwich.  

Overall CRU is a winner
with their creative approach to casual cuisine
and fantastic location!

Later we hopped back on the high speed ferry to Hyannis
enjoying the sunny view and soft breeze
​of the stunning Nantucket Sound.
